Since when Microsoft has launched official "Building Windows 8" blog, the company is trying post more and more interesting details about Windows 8 regularly.

First Microsoft announced about USB 3.0 support in Windows 8:

Windows 8 Will Come With Support for USB 3.0, Microsoft Confirms

And today Microsoft has made another exciting announcement about an excellent feature in Windows 8.

Windows 8 will come with a completely new redesigned file copy, move, rename and delete dialog box. According to Microsoft, they have improved the file management functionality in Windows 8 and the file copy/move dialog box UI has been changed completely.

Here is what the official announcement says:

Copying, moving, renaming, and deleting are far and away the most heavily used features within Windows Explorer, representing 50% of total command usage (based on Windows 7 telemetry data).

There are some pretty cluttered and confusing parts of the Windows 7 copy experience. This is particularly true when people need to deal with files and folders that have the same file names, in what we call file name collisions.

We clearly have an opportunity to make some improvements in the experience of high-volume copying, in dealing with file name collisions, and in assuring the successful completion of copy jobs.

In Windows 8, we have three main goals for our improvements to the copy experience:

One place to manage all copy jobs: Create one unified experience for managing and monitoring ongoing copy operations.Clear and concise: Remove distractions and give people the key information they need.User in control: Put people in control of their copy operations.

Based on these goals, we made four major improvements to the copy experience.

Redesigned Copy/Move Dialog Box:

First, we’ve consolidated the copy experience. You can now review and control all the Explorer copy jobs currently executing in one combined UI. Windows 8 presents all pending copy jobs in this single dialog, saving you from having to navigate through multiple floating dialogs looking for the one you need.

Windows_8_Explorer_Copy_Dialog_Box.png

Ability to Pause/Resume File Operations:

Next, we’ve added the ability to pause, resume, and stop each copy operation currently underway. This gives you control over which copy jobs will complete first. You can also click any of the source or destination folders while the copy operation is taking place and open up those folders.

To support this new ability to prioritize and decide, we’ve added a detailed view with a real-time throughput graph. Now each copy job shows the speed of data transfer, the transfer rate trend, and how much data in left to transfer. While this is not designed for benchmarking, in many cases it can provide a quick and easy way to assess what is going on for a particular job.

Here you can see three copy jobs underway:

Windows_8_Explorer_Copy_Dialog_Box_Details.png

Estimated Time Remaining:

We’re anticipating that many of you are going to want to know what we’ve done to improve the accuracy of the estimated time remaining for a copy to complete.

Estimating the time remaining to complete a copy is nearly impossible to do with any precision because there are many unpredictable and uncontrollable variables involved – for instance, how much network bandwidth will be available for the length of the copy job? Will your anti-virus software spin up and start scanning files? Will another application need to access the hard drive? Will the user start another copy job?

Rather than invest a lot of time coming up with a low confidence estimate that would be only slightly improved over the current one, we focused on presenting the information we were confident about in a useful and compelling way. This makes the most reliable information we have available to you so you can make more informed decisions.

Conflict Resolution:

Our last major set of improvements simplify and clean up the experience for resolving file name collisions, which we also refer to as “conflict resolution.” At this point we can admit that the current experience can be rather confusing. People don’t know which files are which, and they find it challenging to find the information they need to make a decision.

Windows_8_Explorer_Copy_Dialog_Box_Conflict.png

Our new design is much more clear, concise, and efficient, providing a much more visible and actionable approach to conflict resolution. All the files from the source are on the left. All the files in the target location with file name collisions are on the right. The screen layout is easy to understand and shows you the critical information for all the collisions, front and center in one dialog.

If you need to know even more about the conflicting files, you can hover over the thumbnail image to see the file path or double-click it to open it from here.

Finally, in addition to these big improvements, we’ve also done a thorough scrub and removed many of the confirmation dialogs that you’ve told us are annoying or feel redundant (i.e. “are you sure you want to move this file to the recycle bin?” or “are you sure you want to merge these folders?”) to create a quieter, less distracting experience.

All of this adds up to building a significantly improved copy experience, one that is unified, concise, and clear, and which puts you in control of your experience.

Following is an official video featuring all these new improvements and redesigned copy/move dialog box:

Microsoft confirms existence of App store in Windows 8

We have told you about "App Store" feature found in Windows 8 builds that will work if a software market. It will very probably 8 Windows users to download and install software without them searching websites allow.

Recently we told you about the launch of the official Windows 8 blog:

Microsoft launches official "building Windows 8? Blog, pre-release Build to come in the coming months

Microsoft has released a new announcement on official blog to introduce Windows 8 team and this announcement confirms existence of accidentally "App Store" feature in Windows 8.

Here's what this official announcement says:

Windows 8 has new features in the full width of the product. It takes quite a team to build Windows 8.

The work of the implementation on Windows happens when developers write code. This code implements features that originate from specifications written by program management along with interaction design of product designers. Testers are responsible to ensure the spec is complete and the code does what the spec says that it should do.

Microsoft has released the work of Windows divided into "feature teams," groups of developers who own a combination of architectural elements and scenarios in Windows. Microsoft has approximately 35 feature teams in the Windows 8 Organization. Each feature team has anywhere from 25-40 developers, plus testing and program management, all work together. The teams are all focused on building a worldwide product, and so some of the teams are located outside the United States and worldwide.

Many of the teams described below features or areas that you are familiar with or that you can probably find out on the basis of the name. Microsoft also has these teams in seven larger groups that related teams together-fundamentals, devices and networks, core OS, developer experience, user experience, Web services, and our engineering system draw organized. The Group of Windows Live (Hotmail, Messenger, Skydrive, photos, LiveID, and more) also has a similar structure. Internet Explorer group is also a few teams on its own, but obviously contributes for various Windows 8.

Downloading 2 Freeware "Synergy" and "Director" control of multiple PCs with one Input mouse and keyboard

Recently we posted about "Mouse without frontiers" tool will be released by Microsoft Garage:

Microsoft Releases free "mouse without borders" Utility

The above tool allows you to control up to 4 PCs with a single mouse and keyboard. You can move your mouse cursor from one screen to another.

Kowalski"AskVG readers"Nunja Business"and" shared 2 excellent free tools "Synergy" and "Director" who do the same work Input.

Control_Multiple_PC

Synergy:

Synergy is a free and open source software that you can easily share your mouse and keyboard between multiple computer systems, where each computer has its own display. No special hardware is required, you just need a network connection. Synergy can be used in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Use is as simple as moving the mouse from the edge of your screen. You can even share your Clipboard.

You can download it by using following link:

Download Synergy

Input Director:

Input Director is another similar free tool for Windows that allows you to control multiple Windows systems only users using your keyboard/mouse connected to a single computer system. It is designed for people who have two (or more) computers next to each other and find themselves regularly to switch from one system to another.

With Input Director, you can share a single keyboard/mouse on a range of systems. You switch which system receives the input either by hotkey, to move the cursor so that it transitions from one screen to another (in a very similar way to a multi-monitor setup). The idea is that you can post the monitoring of two or more systems in a row and use a shared keyboard/mouse to check all of them.

Input Director also supports a "shared" Clipboard, which you can copy data to the Clipboard on one system, on the transition to another and paste.

Input Director is required for Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008 or Windows 7.

You can download it by using following link:

This quota may be increased by changing the MaxStringContentLength property on the XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas object used when creating the XML reader. Line 1, position 9665.

UPDATE: Tutorial updated with new screenshots and methods.

You might be using the Desktop context menu since a long time in Windows but did you know that you can customize it to your needs? You can add/remove items from the context menu, you can re-arrange items, you can group those items, you can add your name in the context menu, you can add an image in context menu, you can add your favorite application shortcut in context menu, you can enable "View" menu in context menu. Phew... There are lots of things which you can do with Desktop context menu.

So this tutorial will help you in fully customize the Desktop context menu in Windows XP. So tighten your seat belts and get ready for our journey.

The default Windows XP Desktop context menu looks as following:

Default_Windows_XP_Desktop_Context_.jpg

and following are a few examples of the customized Desktop context menu which you'll get after following this tutorial:

Modified_Windows_XP_Desktop_Cont-1.jpg

Exploring_Modified_Windows_XP_De-1.jpg

Exploring_Modified_Windows_XP_Deskt.jpg

So without wasting any time, lets start the tutorial:

How to Edit the Desktop Context Menu?

First question comes how will you edit the whole Desktop context menu? To edit it, you'll need Resource Hacker. If you don't know about Resource hacker, then visit this link.

To customize the Desktop context menu, we'll need to edit "%windir%\System32\Shell32.dll" file in Resource hacker. When you'll open "Shell32.dll" file in Resource hacker, you'll see various folders in left-side pane like Bitmap, Menu, String Table. Dialog, etc. We'll only need to edit "Menu" and "String Table" folders for our task.

Customizing Menu Items Text:

To change any menu item text, just replace its name to your desired name. e.g. I have changed almost all menu items names in the given screenshots, Refresh has been renamed to Reload Icons, New has been renamed to Create, Properties has been renamed to Personalize, etc.

Almost all menu items name can be changed in "Menu -> 215". So go to "215" menu in Resource Hacker and change your desired menu item text enclosed in "" and then click on "Compile Script" button. For example, To change "Refresh" to "Reload Icons":

Change following line:

MENUITEM "R&efresh", 28931, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED

To:

MENUITEM "Rel&oad Icons", 28931, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED

To change "Properties" text, you'll need to edit "Menu -> 220".

A few menu items like "Lock Web Items on Desktop", "Show Desktop Icons" and "Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard" are stored in "Menu -> 218".

To change "New" menu item's text, go to "String Table -> 1895" and in right-side pane, change text of "30315" line.

Removing Menu Items:

If you want to remove any particular menu item, then simply select its line of code and delete it and then click on "Compile Script" button. For example, if you want to delete "Refresh" from context menu, then delete following line from "Menu -> 215":

MENUITEM "R&efresh", 28931, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED

Grouping Menu Items:

You can also group menu items to save some menu space and to make it more organized. To group menu items, you'll need to add some extra code.

First add following lines of code at the place where you want to show the main group:

POPUP "Put_Group_Label", 0, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED, 0
{
}

Replace "Put_Group_Label" with any desired text which you want to show in context menu.

Now you'll need to cut paste the desired menu items code between the curly braces.

For example, as in the screenshot I have grouped "View" and "Arrange Icons as" menu items in "Icons Menu". What I did, I pasted the above mentioned code just before the "View" menu item code line and then moved the lines of "View" and "Arrange Icons as" menu items between curly braces.

Its a bit complex task and require some practice.

Adding Image in Desktop Context Menu:

To add an image in context menu, visit following tutorial:

Add an Image in Desktop/Explorer Context Menu in Windows XP

Adding Your Favorite Application Shortcut in Desktop Context Menu:

You can also add any favorite application shortcut to context menu, like Firefox, Media Player, Winamp, etc. To know about it, visit following tutorial:

Add Your Favorite Program Shortcut in Desktop Context Menu in Windows XP

Enable "View" Menu in Desktop Context Menu:

"View" menu is not present in Desktop context menu. After applying following tutorial you'll be able to get "View" menu in Desktop context menu just like Windows Vista:

How to enable VIEW Menu on Desktop in Windows XP

Add Your Name or Any Desired String in Desktop Context Menu:

As you can see in the screenshot, I have put my name at top in context menu. You can also do the same with the help of following tutorial:

How to Add Your Name in Desktop Context Menu in Windows XP?

PS: If you face problems while changing the menu items text, grouping them, enabling view menu, etc, then you can use my ready-made code for it.

Just copy following code and replace the existing code in "Menu -> 215" with this new code. Click on "Compile Script" button and you'll get almost the same look as shown in screenshot. Now you can change the text, etc easily:

215 MENUEX
LANGUAGE LANG_ENGLISH, SUBLANG_ENGLISH_US
{
POPUP "", 0, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED, 0
{
MENUITEM "!*~.VISHAL.~*!", 33333, MFT_STRING, MFS_GRAYED | MFS_DEFAULT

MENUITEM "&Auto Arrange", 28753, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "A&lign to Grid", 28756, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
}
}
POPUP "&Clipboard Menu", 1, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED, 0
{
MENUITEM "&Paste", 28698, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "Paste &Shortcut", 28700, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "&Undo", 28699, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
}
MENUITEM "Rel&oad Icons", 28931, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "Media Player", 28785, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "", 65535, MFT_SEPARATOR, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "Customize This &Folder...", 28722, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
MENUITEM "", 65535, MFT_SEPARATOR, MFS_ENABLED
}
}

NOTE: If you face problems while saving the file after editing in resource hacker, then make sure you have disabled WFP (Windows File Protection) service using WFP Patcher, it can be found in our “Download” section.

Also if you are getting error “Can’t create file…“, that means you have edited and saved the same file recently and there is a backup file which needs to be deleted before saving the file again. Go to the "System32" folder and you’ll see a file “Shell32_original.dll”. Delete it and try to save the file again.

How to completely remove/uninstall a Software program in Windows without using 3rd Party Software?

In general all computer users to install various software programs regularly. Sometimes they keep them and sometimes they decide to remove them.

Remove a program in Windows, we uninstall it from Control Panel, but many times the standard delete utility provided by the program does not completely remove the program. The lefts some entries in the Windows registry, some files in different folders on your hard disk drives.

These leftovers could slow down your system and it makes no sense to keep them in your system.

There are many 3rd party software such as Revo uninstaller, etc available on the Internet who claim that the complete removal of a software program in Windows, but sometimes failure also completely remove this software a software from your system.

We here at AskVG always try to the things to do today, so in this tutorial we're going to share some easy-to-use steps that you to completely remove a software program in Windows will help.

So without wasting time lets start the tutorial. We've taken Mozilla Firefox as an example in this tutorial:

We have divided this tutorial in 4 steps:

PanelDelete with control remaining in files and folders from the Windows Temp folder ProgramRemove RegistryEmpty delete keys Software

Step 1: removing the Software via the control panel

The first thing first! Remove the software using the Windows Control Panel.

Windows XP:

Open the Control Panel, double-click "Add/Remove Programs", select the name of the program and click on Uninstall button. It will delete.

Windows Vista/7:

Open Control Panel, click "programs and features", select the name of the program and click on Uninstall button.

Uninstall_Software_Using_Control_Panel.png

Step 2: Delete Remaining files and folders of the program

Although you have removed the software via the Control Panel, some a few files of this program is still in system folders.

Delete those leftovers, you must place a check mark after folders:

% ProgramFiles%
% appdata%

If you have a folder with the name of the software program that you deleted using 1st step, delete.

Note: You have to type the above text in RUN or Start menu search box and press Enter. It will open the folder directly.

The Program Files folder:

Delete_Software_Folder_from_Program_Files.png

Application Data Folder:

Delete_Software_Folder_from_Application_Data.png

Note 2: 64-bit system users will also want to check the folder "c: Program Files (x 86)". We assume here that your Windows is installed in c: drive. If you have installed Windows in a different drive, replace c: by drive letter.

Step 3: Remove Software keys from the Windows registry

You have to be careful while after this step. Perform this step only if you are familiar with Windows registry and Registry Editor if you have used in the past.

If you uninstall a program, many times the entry in the Windows registry is not removed by the uninstaller. It can Windows registry size increase.

Completely remove the software, you must also delete the key from the Windows registry.

1. regedit Type in the start menu run or search box, and then press Enter. The Registry Editorwill open.

2. Now go to the following keys one by one:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software

64-bit system users will also want to check after extra key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node

Once you get to the above mentioned keys, find a key with the name of your non-installed software. If you find a key, delete.

Sometimes the name of the key may be based on the company name or the name so if you suspect that a developer key, fold it, and then verify that are associated with the uninstalled software program. If so, you can delete it.

Delete_Software_Key_from_Windows_Registry.png

PS: Make sure to take a backup before deleting anything from Windows registry so that you can restore it later if something goes wrong. Take to backup, right-click the key that you are going to delete "export" and select. It will save one..Reg file that contains the backup that key.

PS2: Expert users can also copy all of the key with the name of the non-installed software using "Ctrl + F" search and delete them. You must be very careful for it. Remove the key only if you are absolutely sure that the key was created by the non-installed software.

Step 4: empty Temp folder

Finally Temp that you can also empty folder contains temporary files and cleaning of this folder is absolutely safe.

Empty the Temp folder, type following in RUN one at a time or start menu search box, and then press Enter:

% temp%
Temp

The Temp folders will open. You can empty them. If Windows gives errors while deleting a few files, let them. These files can be used by some current software or Windows services.

Empty_Temp_Folder.png

That's it. After following the above steps, you will be able to completely uninstall and remove Windows a software program.

Windows 8 will Boot faster than previous Windows versions, Microsoft confirms

Building a new post by Microsoft on Windows 8 Windows 8quickly reveals blog in startup. Windows 8 will be faster than all previous versions of Windows including Windows 7 startup.

We designed Windows 8 so that you don't have to start all that often (and we will always work on reducing the number of required reboots thanks to the patching of running code). But when you start we want to be as soon as possible.

People say that they would rather quality, because they want their PC to shut down completely "off" so that it uses no power-battery life to retain or to reduce their energy use. Sleep is also a good option for this because it also draw no power, and a lot of people really like it. However, it is clearly not for everyone, since one of the other things we have heard that many people want to turn on their PCs and have a "fresh start" to be rather than performing the stuff from their previous session. Sleep/resume is the best option for a quick on/off transitions on Pcs of today, but it still consumes a force in order to maintain the contents of RAM, causing battery drain – even if it's only a little bit on a good optimized system. This is all done with the background of how we all our mobile phones today, which is almost never to restart them, and always using what feels the closest thing to a sleep-like State.

Our challenge was then, designing a way to meet all of these desires on contemporary PCs without some special new hardware. These were our objectives:

Effectively zero Watts of power when offA fresh session after bootVery fast times between pressing the power button and the PC.

In Windows 7 we have made many improvements to the path of startup, including parallel initialization of device drivers, and trigger-start services, but it was clear we should get even more creative (and less incremental) if we hoped to get boot performance anywhere near fast enough to meet all these needs.

Our new mode startup quickly solution is a that is a hybrid of the traditional cold boot and resume from hibernation.

In a traditional shutdown, we close all the user sessions and we close session in the kernel services and devices to prepare for a full shutdown.

Now here the main difference for Windows 8 is: If in Windows 7, we close the user sessions, but instead of the kernel close session, we sleep. In comparison with a full sleep mode, in which a lot of memory pages used by apps, session 0 sleep data is much smaller, which costs significantly less time to write to the disk. If you aren't familiar with Hibernate, we are effectively the system of law and memory content when you save to a file on disk (Hiberfil.sys), and then read that back in and restoring of content back to resume on memory. With this technique with startup gives us a significant advantage for boot time, sleep since reading the file in and reinitializing drivers is much faster on most systems (30-70% faster on most systems that we've tested).

It is faster because the system hibernation resume session is relatively less work than doing a full initialization of the system, but it is also faster because we added a new multi-phase CV power, who has been to use the cores in a multi-core system parallel to the work of the read file and uncompress the sleep split content. For those of you who prefer winter sleep, this also results in faster resumes from hibernation also keep.

Another important thing to note about Windows 8 fast start up mode is that, although we are not a complete "Plug & Play" enumeration of all the drivers do, still we initialize drivers in this mode. Those of you who like cold boat to "freshen up" drivers and devices will be happy to know that is still effective in this new mode, even if not an identical process to a cold boot.

This new mode will deliver benefits quickly startup on almost all systems, whether they have a rotating hard disk or a solid state drive (SSD), but for newer systems with fast SSD's it is downright amazing. Check out the video below to see for yourself:

Of course, there are times where you want to run a full shutdown – for example, if you want to add or change the system of some open hardware. We have an option in the user interface to return back to the Windows 7 shutdown/cold boot behavior, or because that is probably a pretty rare thing, you can use the new/full switch on shutdown.exe. From a cmd prompt, run/s/volledige: shutdown/t 0 to invoke a full immediate exit. Choose to restart in the UI will also do a full shutdown, followed by a cold boot.

That is great news. It only took 8 seconds to boot in the video ...

Microsoft confirms Windows 8 Will Come bundled with Windows Media Center

server temporarily unavailable

No more confusion left! Microsoft has officially Media Center confirmed that will definitely be a part Windows 8or.

There were many rumors among people that Microsoft has removed Media Center from Windows 8 but it turns out to be false after Microsoft's official post at building Windows 8 blog.

According to Steven Sinofsky:

I want to reassure customers that Media Center will definitely be part of Windows 8. No doubt about it. Knowing how strong the support for Media Center is among pre-release testers, we still have work to do to make sure the quality and compatibility with add-ins is what you would expect even in pre-release (as with any release of Windows, compatibility is a major effort and when we work on the underlying video engine, as one example, we have to make sure features that push these areas receive adequate coverage).

In the coming months, many folks will be testing pre-release builds or Windows 8. As everyone knows, two things are always the case early on. First, the software is not done and things will change-features will be added and removed. Second, the different editions or SKUs are not developed or announced until late in the development process (closer to market availability).

Media Center will not be part of the first pre-release builds. Some other features/capabilities will not be in the first pre-release builds including: Windows 7 games, DVD Creator, upgrade setup, Dot Net 3.5 (Note there are perhaps a couple of other relatively low profile items but just wanted to hit the major ones here). These are engineering decisions as well as business decisions.

As we get closer to market availability, we will make sure to explain how not just these specifically but all features of the product will be made available.

Interestingly, the feedback about Media Center was predominantly "we will pay extra, just include it" based on the input directly to me. Today Media Center is part of "premium" SKUs for Windows, which means that is the case today.

In addition a lot of folks said "everyone I know uses it." As I said, we're completely committed to delivering Media Center in Windows 8, but I wanted to share some of the usage data. This data in no way influenced not delivering it as part of the first pre-release build-we are as committed as ever to Media Center.

Microsoft is really making everyone excited about Windows 8 ...
