Recently Mozilla announced its new sign-in system "BrowserID", which is an experimental new way of logging in to websites similar to OpenID.
Mozilla's goal with BrowserID is designing something safe and easy for users and developers.
Here's what Mozilla says about BrowserID:
For a Web Developer, create a new application always implies a tricky obstacle: how to sign users? An e-mail address with a confirmation step is the classical method, but it requires a user time and the user must be an extra step and another password to remember. Outsourcing login and identity management to large providers such as Facebook, Twitter or Google is an option, but these products are also delivered with lock-in, reliability issues and concerns to data privacy.
With BrowserID is there a better way to log in. BrowserID implements the/checked/email protocol, which provides a streamlined user experience. A user can prove their ownership of an e-mail address with less confirmation messages and without site-specific passwords.
Here are a few interesting properties of BrowserID:
Easy to use:
Users get a streamlined one-click experience that feels the same on every site they visit. Developers save time by BrowserID, eliminating the need to implement e-mail authentication.
Safe:
BrowserID implements the checked email Protocol, which is designed with safety in mind. Sites get proof of ownership using public key cryptography — but don't worry, Mozilla has an authentication service, so you can start without a single line of crypto code to write.
Cross-Browser:
BrowserID will work on all modern browsers, including recent versions of IE, and on mobile browsers!
Decentralised:
Anyone with an email address can sign with BrowserID, and e-mail providers BrowserID support to the system even easier for their users can deploy.
Respects the Privacy of the users:
Unlike other systems sign-in does not BrowserID leaks information back to a random server (not even to the BrowserID servers) on which sites a user visits.
BrowserID is a very experimental atm. to start check box:
